Why Is There Something Rather Than Nothing?

There is a new book out by journalist and former philosophy grad student Jim Holt called Why Does the World Exist? It’s worth reading if you’re interested in questions like that.

Nowadays, when people ask why the world exists they are generally asking why the Big Bang occurred. Unfortunately, nobody knows. The most common answers areย that either some random quantum event or some higher being made it happen. Some physicists think that our universe is just a small part of reality and that the existence of a vast, possibly infinite, collection of other universes explains why ours is here and/or why ours is the way it is.ย

As soon as a particular cause or reason for our universe to exist is suggested, however, it is natural to ask why that cause or reason is the explanation, rather than some other cause or reason. Why are the laws of quantum mechanics in effect? Where did God come from? Where did all those other universes come from?

This is why the answer provided by a Buddhist monk at the very end of the Why Does the World Exist? is my personal favorite:ย “As a Buddhist, … he believes that the universe had no beginning….The Buddhist doctrine of a beginning-less universe makes the most metaphysical sense….A billion causes could not make the universe come into existence out of what does not exist”.

Perhaps the reality that exists beyond our universe or that preceded the Big Bang (the super-universe, the multiverse, the quantum foam, whatever it might be) always existed and always will. It simply was. Or is. It never came into existence, so no cause, reason or explanation is necessary or even possible. Perhaps it’s cyclical. Perhaps it’s not. Perhaps it’s always changing. Perhaps it isn’t. But it had no beginning and might have no end.

The great 17th century philosopher Spinoza referred to all of existence asย โ€œGod, or Natureโ€ (Deus, sive Natura): โ€œThat eternal and infinite being we call God, or Nature”. I prefer “Nature” to “God”. To Spinoza, it was the same thing and it was eternal.

Scientific History Is Made

Researchers have discovered that parts of our DNA formerly believed to be inactive play an extremely important role.

From the New York Times:

The human genome is packed with at least four million gene switches that reside in bits of DNA that once were dismissed as โ€œjunkโ€ but that turn out to play critical roles in controlling how cells, organs and other tissues behave. The discovery, considered a major medical and scientific breakthrough, has enormous implications for human health because many complex diseases appear to be caused by tiny changes in hundreds of gene switches.

Among the diseases that may depend on the action of these genetic switches are cancer, multiple sclerosis and lupus. Other conditions, such as diabetes, depression and high blood pressure, may also be affected by these switches.

In fact, it sounds as if understanding these genetic mechanisms might take us very close to understanding why one person is different from another in all kinds of ways. ย

And, on a political note, it should be noted that the federal government played a crucial role in this research:

The findings are the fruit of an immense federal project involving 440 scientists from 32 labs around the world.

Mice That Eat Yogurt Have Larger Testicles

That’s a headline you don’t see every day.

The Scientific American reports that a recent study indicates that eating probiotic yogurt (the kind with bacteria that assist with digestion) has beneficial effects in mice. They become leaner and healthier. Their fur is thicker and more shiny. The males have larger testicles and more success at reproduction. The females have larger litters and do a better job weaning their young.

An earlier study suggested that mice that eat probiotic yogurt handle stress better.

I’m not exactly a mouse, but I might add something to my diet.

The Return of the Weather Underground

Most of us don’t need to know the temperature outside to the nearest 10th of a degree. Nevertheless, the site below is a boon to those of us who want accurate, local information about the weather. Whether or not we can do anything about it.

“Weather Underground has developed the world’s largest network of personal weather stations (almost 23,000 stations in the US and over 13,000 across the rest of the world) providing our site’s users with the most localized weather conditions available.”

They have a weather station less than a mile from our house. The current temperature is 74.1. That’s local coverage.
